The Small Faces.
Watching a late night programme about psychedelic music from the 60s I saw a performance by them of a song about a baker which was brilliant so I then spent the next hour on YouTube watching all of their stuff.

Steve Marriott was some singer!

What a group but much forgotten I’d say.

Can defitely hear the beginnings of the metal sound in their heavy stuff like Rolling Over...Bloody love the Small Faces even though they're generations off me!

That bit in the video for Lazy Sunday where he's being strangled by that old woman, was filmed in Belgrave St in Limehouse.

That's corroborated by Ian MacLagen. There's a Youtube video somewhere of him doing Debris. In his intro he talks about RL and says the song (Itchycoo Park) is about the failure of the education system and, um, how nice it is going to the park in the summer. The 'we'll get high' thing isn't necessarily about drugs either, just being happy, although it might mean that as well.

Small Faces were a proper mod band in their early days, according to both Daltry and Townsend The Who were just pretending.

Yup true... Pete Meaden (the Oo's manager at the time) forced Mod onto them... changed their name to the High Numbers... brought out a dodgy single (I'm the Face) ... and then a few months later went back to their original moniker... my old man said that all the East London Mods followed the Small faces and all the West London Mods followed The Who...

Agree. Despite his cockney mod image Ronnie Lane was actually a very folksy songwriter, echoing similar British cultural themes to that of Ray Davies.

Re: The Small Faces.
Saw the West end show "all or nothing" last year. The story of the Small Faces with live performances of all the songs. Similar style to Jersey Boys.

Highly recommend it if it is still playing.
